Your Homecoming Questions Answered

Honey, I’m home!!…coming. If you survived, that joke, you’ll definitely make it through this blog :) If you’re wondering the ins and outs of Homecoming, here’s the 101.

  1. Why do colleges call it homecoming?

Occurring in October, Homecoming refers to the extension of hospitality for alumni to attend + participate in a school coordinated event such as a football game or dance. Usually there is a football game that is planned based on which opponent the home team feels most confident in beating, where alumni and current students of the college/ high school gather and cheer for their alma mater’s victory.

In high school, this game incorporates a homecoming court where the student body nominates for student for homecoming king and queen, and then the final vote is revealed on the field. Sometimes, they hols the Homecoming Court at he dance. After the game on Friday, there is usually a school dance that takes place as a final celebration on Saturday. The week leading up to the game and dance is known as Homecoming week and usually entails some school pep rallies and spirit events.

2. How should you dress to homecoming?

For the game, especially in college, wear school colors! Game day outfits vary between school to school, but generally jeans and a top that is your school’s colors or mascot is a safe option! Make sure to take into account weather as the game takes place in October.

For the dance, unique and formal dresses are the standard! Think sequin mini dresses, full body ruched cocktail dress, and even some satin maxi dresses. You can wear heels and cute handbags too!

3. Do you need a date to go to Homecoming?

Absolutely not! You can bring friends, family, or go completely on your own! Homecoming is an inclusive and celebratory event, not as rigid and exclusive as Prom!

4. What do girls wear to homecoming 2024?

2024 will see a lot of mini length dresses in bright jewel tones and black! The more sparkle, the better. With everyone trying to be unique and have their own special moment, we can expect to see a lot of special occasion dresses with differentiators such as ruffles, sparkly fabric, rhinestones, and ruching.

5. What color should I wear to homecoming?

There really is no correct answer here. While pastels are not nearly as popular as jewel tones for homecoming as it takes place in Fall, where whatever you feel most confident in! The most popular hoco dress colors are red, royal blue, and hot pink.

6. What happens at hoco?

Hoco usually refers to the dance portion of the week. Before hoco, students spend the day getting their hair and makeup done to meet with their dates and friends to take photos. A lot of friend groups also meet for dinner before and then make their way over to the event.

The event consists of music, dancing, small bites + beverages, photo ops, and sometimes a crowning! The homecoming dance is a setting for celebration and community above all else.

7. Why do American schools have homecoming?

In short, homecoming is directly related to football so it is an exclusively American event.
